We are full swing into the last round of competition before we move into semi-finals and finals after the school holidays. Mid Canterbury Netball players/coaches/officials and supporters are thoroughly enjoying playing indoors and in particular the supporters who don’t have to endure the cold on the sideline.
Our social competition has increased to 17 teams on a Wednesday night, up from 12 teams in 2015. We have seen a number of players return to netball and choosing to play for longer as the wooden floor is a lot more forgiving.
It has been great to see a number of people training as Bench Officials, thanks to Gail Bensemen for her enthusiasm and encouragement in this area.
We faced a shortage of umpires at the start of the season, thanks to those that answered the call and are giving their time freely to umpire each week. We couldn’t operate without umpires, thank you to you all for doing this important job.
We were delighted that Brooke Morshuis moved to Mid Canterbury and accepted the position as MCN Development Officer, having worked for Netball South for a number of years it was great to get someone of Brooke’s calibre move to our area. The local schools, children attending our Y1-4 ANZ Futureferns and Y1-6 children attending the school holiday programmes are enjoying all that Brooke has to share.
We are now into Rep season, with Under 17 and Under 15 teams training hard and a huge thanks to our Rep Coaches and Managers for being involved with our Rep Teams. Good luck to Under 17 team attending Nationals in the next few weeks.
Our administrator Aimee has now been with us for two years and has a great grasp on the role, we thank her for running netball so well. Lastly, with volunteers becoming increasingly hard to find I would like to thank all those that give them time to MCN, we couldn’t function without the many people that help keep MCN running. Good luck to all the teams as finals approach.

We are in the very fortunate position here in Mid Canterbury that all games are played in the fabulous EA Networks Centre meaning no weather delays for our players.
The Senior Competition is well into the business end of the season with all grades now into the Trophy Round and teams looking for valuable points to gain a top four position for Semi Finals and Finals. Teams in the ACL Premier Competition and Social Grade also compete for Challenge Trophies so a lot of interest to see who the teams are that will be the winners of those trophies at the end of the Trophy Round.
Senior Competition finals will get underway with the finals of the New World Senior Competition on Saturday 13th August followed by Social Grade finals on Wednesday 17th August finals week will be complete after the ACL Premier finals on Thursday 18th August. The premier final will be followed by the presentation of trophies to all grade winners.

With a squad of 10 very excited girls, and only a very short time together a practice night was sorted and team building session was first on the list. It's always a challenge with a new team of girls at different levels of fitness and skills. As a team we worked on getting free for the ball, passing, timing and how to get the ball through court. After our first tournament we started working on defence one on one, and movement with the shooters in the circle. Each week we try to build on from the week before. I have a lovely group of girls with most of them never played together. Practice times are always fun with lots of laughs.
Our first tournament together was Queen’s Birthday and this was about getting to know one another on court and which position each player would suit for this team. Our first game was against Selwyn and this was a good game coming away with a win 32-28. The next game was against a very tall North Canterbury team. This was another very good game and the girls had to work very hard for one another. They never gave up and kept trying till the very end. We were down all the way but won the last quarter 10-5. The final score was 36-31. Day two and we were up against two very tall and strong Canterbury teams. The girls worked very hard both games and set themselves goals each quarter. Canterbury A were an outstanding side and the girls worked very hard all game it was a big loss but we came away with many positives with a final score of 17-44. Canterbury B were also a very strong team the final score was 21-46 to Canterbury. This weekend away, the girls came together and combinations were formed.
We have continued to practice each week and have managed a friendly game with Hampstead A. Each time we take the court the combinations are getting better and better. These girls show a lot of spirit and never give up.
Our next tournament will be in Oamaru and as a team we will continue to set goals each game, and let combinations get stronger and stronger.
This year I have named Co Captains Georgina Kelly and Emma McDowell. Both these girls are very skilled players and have had positive feedback during and after the game.
The build up to Nationals we will try to have two practices a week with one of these a game against one of our club sides.
