Selwyn Netball Centre

selwyn1

The netball season is well underway out at Selwyn with our second round of competition finishing on the 9th of July. Our centre consists of 17 clubs from throughout the Selwyn District. This season we have around 2000 players partaking in our Saturday programme, and a further 300 participating in our weekday ANZ futureFERNS Programme.

We are extremely lucky to have not only a dedicated committee but such a fantastic group of volunteers who provide us with the necessary resources to ensure the delivery of netball in our centre remains positive and fulfilling.

CONGRATULATIONS

We would like to extend huge congratulations to Kathy Hely, SNC Competitions Convener, who was awarded a Netball New Zealand Service Award at the Netball NZ AGM in Auckland. This award is truly well deserved recognition for Kathy’s many years of service to the sport we love.

GAME OFFICIALS

The Game Officials group has once again had a busy start to the season. We have around 150 junior umpires this season, who are allocated to our Year 5 & 6 games. This provides a fantastic opportunity for these young umpires to gain confidence and get valuable experience on non-competitive games. The success of this programme is largely due to the ongoing backing from our club members who support these umpires each week – thank you to everyone involved.

Several workshops have already been held for umpires this year with more scheduled over the next couple of months. More details are available on our website. A team of umpire coaches work tirelessly at the Centre to run these workshops and provide individual umpires with coaching.

This season we have appointed a Bench Officials Coordinator, to provide training and learning opportunities to our bench officials. This is proving to be very valuable, with a number of bench officials attending courses and improving their skills.

We would like to thank each and every one of our umpires for the commitment they show during the season, and their desire to continuously improve their game. The game cannot be played without them and is made all the more enjoyable by the high level of knowledge and skills they display.

ANZ futureFERNS

The ANZ futureFERNS programme is underway on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, with two Junior Coordinators running these sessions. This programme is once again proving to be hugely successful, with players, star helpers and coaches alike showing great enthusiasm. 2016 has seen an increase in numbers in both the Year 1 & 2 and Year 3 & 4 programme. Our Year 1-4 programme will culminate in an end of season tournament for all teams involved.

COACHING

We have held several coaching courses this season, with good attendance from our clubs. Further courses are scheduled over the coming months- more details are available on our website

This season we are implementing our Coach Mentor Programme, which provides coaches with opportunity to receive support from trained mentors throughout the season. We see this as a way of ensuring our volunteer coaches are appropriately supported, and encouraging them to continue coaching netball.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT & REP PROGRAMME

We are proud to have 8 rep teams representing SNC this season. The last few months have seen our Player Development Group working hard to select teams, appoint team management, and prepare our teams for the numerous tournaments they are attending.

Our U17 A Team will be representing the centre at the NNZ National Under 17 Championships in Rangiora, and Anna McCormick, from Selwyn, has been selected to attend the Under 19 National Championships with the North Canterbury Team. A new initiative at SNC this season is the introduction of an Under 15 Development Team. The Development Team has been introduced due to the gap between Primary and Under 15 representative teams.

We wish these teams the best of luck in their representative seasons and hope they gain some fantastic experiences while representing our Centre!

PARTNERS

The Selwyn Netball Centre is extremely fortunate to have the support of generous partners and foundations which enable us to continue netball delivery in our area.
