Hokitika Netball Centre

hokitika netball centre

From our Executive team:

Kia ora, and welcome to our 2016 season. This year, let’s continue our efforts to appreciate, encourage, and positively support all those involved with making the Hokitika Netball Centre a great one to be part of. We all contribute to the health of netball by giving generously of our time and skills. We are all responsible to each other to role model sideline behaviours that make us all feel proud, safe, supported and appreciated. Be proactive and solution focused when you have concerns, the executive team is very keen to hear suggestions for areas of improvement, and will keep the health and growth of our Centre as a whole at the forefront of our collective decision making.

Thank you to Karen Gwaliasi and Sue Pomare at St Mary’s School for coordinating the ANZ futureFERNS competition this year, and to Jill Robinson and Kay Godfrey who will be taking over from Cassie Lee as our umpire co-ordinators. We farewell Cassie this year, as she moves to Christchurch then heads off on a well earned ‘over-seas’ adventure. She has served the Hokitika Netball Centre in many different ways, and we will miss her greatly.

The executive meets throughout the season to ensure that the season runs smoothly. If you’d like to join the executive, you would be very welcome, we have a range of different roles and duties, and can work with you to enable you to contribute the time and skills you are able to commit - the combined skills and knowledge base available are invaluable – ‘Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi’.

Hokitika Netball Centre

This season we have four teams from Greymouth and four teams from Hokitika participating in an inter-centre competition. Teams will play two rounds of competition. The Hokitika teams will also compete in our own local competition semi-finals and finals. This year we begin round one with an A-B grade of eight teams, C grade with four teams, and D grade with five teams. After round one, A, B, C, and D grade splits will be reviewed and decided for the next two rounds. It’s fantastic to have 17 teams in the grades this year.

ANZ futureFerns Netball

We will be running all of the age groups (Yfuture fernsear 1 & 2, Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6) this year with the purchase of our portable poles which are due to arrive soon. Our five Year 1 & 2 Fantail teams will continue to play in the gym this year, so that it can always be on no matter what the weather, these skills and games are played every second weekend (depending on gym availability). We currently have six teams in the Kotuku grade (Year 5 & 6), and eight teams in the Tui grade (Year 3 and 4).

Coaching Development

This year we are excited to be implementing the Netball New Zealand development plan for coaches and players, being led by Ange Keenan. This will involve:

  • A clearly structured coaching accreditation pathway, with coaches being able to work through modules from community award to national award levels over a number of years, following the Netball New Zealand coach development framework.
  • A development programme from players aged 8 to 15 years which is supported by Netball Mainland. The objectives of this programme include providing equal opportunities for all players to receive coaching and support regardless of ability or potential; challenge and support players in their development with the aim of improved performance; and in the 13-15 year programme, to identify players who show ability, commitment, and potential for further development.

Congratulations – North Canturbury U17 Squad Selections

Congratulations to the four Hokitika Netball Centre players from Westland High School who were selected into the squad for the North Canterbury U17 team - Brooke Parker, Brianna Keenan, Kaitlin Keenan and Katherine Morris. Caroline Parker and Ange Keenan have been tirelessly driving the girls back and forth over the Alps to enable the girls to participate in squad trainings.

Representative Netball

Expressions of interest have been called for representative team coaches and managers for U17, U15, U13, and U13 Development teams, and players are currently registering their interest in trialling. Once selected, the teams will train as squads, with playing teams selected before each tournament.

Fair Play Supporter Award

hoikitika 1Thank you to the Annabelle Motel for their sponsorship of the new ‘Fair Play’ supporter award. The award is to recognise a parent, spectator, coach, reserve player, grandparent etc who gives noteworthy positive feedback or support on the side-line. The winner for each Saturday (any one person can be selected more than once for the season) will be published in the draw the following week (and mentioned in the radio report). All winners go in the draw at the end of the season to win the major prize, a $200 petrol voucher. Please fill in the form outside the exec room and post it in the nomination box – respond in detail to each area on the form, so that we can share and celebrate the actions of the winning supporter each week.

Awards for 2015

Kitty Crough Cup for the Most Improved Umpire 2015 – Awarded to Brydie Keenan

hokitika 2
Brydie has umpired and played throughout the whole season. She was awarded her Centre Umpire badge this year. With a positive can-do attitude, she had always been open to advice, asked questions and was always able to self-evaluate her own game with a very positive outcome. She stepped up to umpiring the Intercentre grade towards the end of the season, doing a tremendous job in the process, displaying her natural ability and instinct for the game as a young umpire. More recently, she was required to come off the reserve umpires seat with a moments notice, step straight onto court in the Premier semi-final match - we were extremely proud of her, it was a tremendous effort.  This ability and willingness to step up and officiate in pressured situations proves her worth as our deserved winner for 2015.

Efficiency Award - The Vi McDermott Trophy 2015 – Awarded to Sue Pomare

Sue Pomare has been involved with the Hokitika Netball Executive for the past three years and has proven to be a key member. She is one of the first to offer help whenever it is needed, and has done a lot for the Centre behind the scenes. This year Sue took on the new position of being the ANZ futureFERNS Co-ordinator for the Year 1 and 2 netball. I’m sure everyone involved in this grade will agree that it has been so very well run and organised, which is a testament to the hard work the Sue has put into this position.

The Executive Cup for contribution to Hokitika Netball (Westland Milk Products) 2015 –Awarded to Danielle Eckersley

Danielle has been the backbone of the Centre for the past nine years.  Her official role as secretary, ensures that not only are the clubs well informed through the release and coordination of weekly draws, points updates and special notices, she spends many hours filtering a huge amount of netball correspondence so that the clubs only receive what is relevant and important to them. Behind the scenes she is the central pivot for the executive committee, liaising with all subgroups such as ANZ futureFERNS grades, umpires and umpire draws, inter-centre competition and representative planning, while wading through meeting minutes, meeting agendas and action lists. Her passion and dedication to netball extends well beyond the executive committee.  Danielle has also given back to the Centre through umpiring, and being a rep coach and manager. However her true love of netball can be seen when she takes the court, a dedicated and competitive player. It seems that there is not a corner of the netball world that she has not been involved in.
